Alison and I had a wonderful day trip to the coast of France today. We dined at a nice little seaside restaurant in Meschers-sur-Gironde.
We ate what she tells me is a very traditional French meal of Moules Frites, mussels and fries. The mussels were prepared in a white wine sauce with onions and a bit of parsley. A few days ago while in La Rochelle, I had them prepared in a curry cream sauce, and Alison's were served in a Pineau cream sauce. On both days, they were very fresh and very delicious.
She tells me this is one of the only meals the French eat with their fingers.
Here's what the dish looks like when served:
And here is the aftermath:
If you ever visit France, don't miss the opportunity to try this traditional meal.

looks yummy. it's hard to get really fresh mussels around here. i love them just the way you had them, with a nice sauvignon blanc and a loaf of crusty rustic bread. oh yeah, it helps having wonderful dining companions as well. that always makes the meal taste better.

Oh my god, I'd starve in France! I'm a seafood fan, but not really a lover of anything in a 2 piece shell. Ewwww slimey! I'm a big one on consistency and the consistency of those are ick! Give me a good shrimp, lobster or fish dish and I'M there!
What other foods do they eat in France? :ask: I may have to rethink my ideas of visiting there...

I travel to eat. Had a few days in Paris recently highlighted by meals at Grille Montorgueil (Les Halles),Co Ba Saigon on Rue du Faubourg St Honore near metro George V, and a farewell feast at Terminus Nord. I eat filets de harengs pommes a l'huile whenever I get a chance. Why can't I eat it anywhere in the Midwest? I used to live on the East coast so I know what you mean about freshness in seafood.
I have always wanted to visit the La Rochelle - Gironde area. I'm 75 years old so I had better hurry. Got any advice?
