The Season Is Too Short

Clicking the image will take you to its Flickr page. You can see a larger version there.

This is the second week of our CSA participation this year, and the first week we have received strawberries. And all we received was a single pint of them.

Next week we will miss out, as we will be out of town. Some friends will take our share for the week. There might be a final pint or quart of strawberries the next week, but they will be about it.

I know we can get strawberries at the grocery most of the year now, but we are trying to be locavores as much as possible. Buying only locally produced, seasonal foods.

It's tough to do, but we do what we can. The CSA program has helped.

But it is hard to resist the nice looking produce at The Fresh Market and Whole Foods. Produce that has traveled thousands of miles to get here.

Cherry, Cherry

Clicking the image will take you to its Flickr page. You can see a larger version there.

This is a photo of cherries on the little tree in our front yard.

As I mentioned in the previous post about it, Mike told me that he wasn't sure it would bloom its first season, but it did. And it is now covered in fruit. Not enough fruit to make a pie, which is what these tart cherries would be good for.

But as fast as the tree is growing (It's grown over a foot since we planted it in August), perhaps we will be able to bake a pie next summer.

I think Jo Ann would be pleased.

This One's For Mike

Clicking the image will take you to its Flickr page. You can see a larger version there.

This is a blossom on the little cherry tree in our front yard. Our friend Agnes bought it the day after Jo Ann died, for us to plant in her memory.

Despite the drought hardened soil, we managed to dig a hole large enough to plant it, and I watered the tree every day the local water rationing rules allowed.

It obviously survived the winter. I guess it was the fertilizer spikes I pounded in the ground at the drip line in October.

Mike told me that he didn't know if it would bloom the first year, but that if it did, I better take pictures so he could see.

So here you go, bro. I love you. Have a great trip.

I was looking on a DVD for another older photo to try a crop on when I ran across this one taken about the same time.

I don't know why I didn't post this back in September.

I saw these guys in a Japanese holly just outside our back door yesterday afternoon. The one in the first photo was flitting its tongue out, but when I got close it stopped. No matter how still I remained, or how long I waited, it wouldn't stick it out again until I moved away.

They hung out there for about a half hour before slithering off somewhere. Together.

Sorry for the lack of posts. We've been very busy preparing for a gathering of friends here next weekend. There is still much to do.

I try to take a photo or two every day. You can always see the latest on my Flickr photostream

For those of you who use RSS Feed readers, my latest photo uploads are fed here.

Mike is in town for the UK-LSU game, so I will be attending the game with him. It's perfect football weather, and despite the fact LSU (the #1 team in the country) is likely to win the game, I plan to enjoy the day.

I hope your weather is just as good, and that you have a great weekend.

Cat-Like Reflects

Clicking the image will take you to its Flickr page. You can see a larger version there.

So here it is, 2:34 a.m., and I am wide awake.

Ali is the one who has been suffering insomnia lately, but tonight she is in bed, asleep. I usually don't have much trouble sleeping, but tonight I can't.

Today was an emotional day for me. I finally sat down and wrote thank you notes to everyone who sent cards, flowers, or donations to Hospice in Jo Ann's name. I got verklempt more than once during the couple of hours it took me to do it.

I did some other chores I have been putting off for way too long, too. It felt good to get all that stuff done. It felt like I had broken free of the inertia I have been experiencing since Jo Ann died.

I thought I would be exhausted and asleep before The Daily Show came on, but I'm wired.

I guess I will read for a bit. Maybe that will make me sleepy.

I hope everyone has a great Friday. And I hope you like the cat blog Friday photo. That's me reflected in Callie's eye.

It rained today. Over an inch of rain fell. It's not enough to alleviate the severe drought we are in this year, but perhaps it will green up the lawn a bit.

Into The Mystic

Clicking the image will take you to its Flickr page. You can see a larger version there.

We were born before the wind
Also younger than the sun
Ere the bonnie boat was won as we sailed into the mystic
Hark, now hear the sailors cry
Smell the sea and feel the sky
Let your soul and spirit fly into the mystic
And when that fog horn blows I will be coming home
And when that fog horn blows I want to hear it
I don't have to fear it
I want to rock your gypsy soul
Just like way back in the days of old
Then magnificently we will float into the mystic
And when that fog horn blows you know I will be coming home
And when thst fog horn whistle blows I got to hear it
I don't have to fear it
I want to rock your gypsy soul
Just like way back in the days of old
And together we will float into the mystic
Come on girl...
