I've been trying out a new lens I bought the other day. It is a Nikkor 35 mm f/1.8G, which is the equivalent of a standard 50 mm lens we all used on our 35 mm film SLRs long ago.
And the lens sells for less than $200.
I think I am going to have a lot of fun with it.
I took this a week or so ago. We had grilled dinner, and eaten it out on the patio with some good friends. We stayed out way after dark, necessitating the lighting. The lights are by IKEA. I'm not sure where the wine came from, but I suspect it was purchased at Wine + Market in downtown Lex Vegas.

I took this photo last evening at the birthday party of a friend. An adult friend.
This 10 foot long python was one of about a dozen snakes and lizards brought by a local man who rescues reptiles from abuse and neglect. He supports his work by hiring them out for events like this.
Granted, most of the birthday parties he works are for kids, but no matter. There were lots of kids in attendance at the party last night, and they all had a blast handling all the creatures.
I ran home and grabbed my camera, which I forgot when I first went over there.

This is the PPG Tower in downtown Pittsburgh. It is the centerpiece of PPG Place, a complex of six buildings that is the headquarters of PPG Industries, one of the world's largest glass manufacturers.
The complex was designed by Philip Johnson and John Burgee, and was completed in 1984. The tower is 40 stories, and rises 635 feet above ground level. I took this photo from atop Mt. Washington, across the Monogehela River from downtown Pittsburgh. Alison and I try to make it up there every time we visit the city. Luckily, Sunday was a beautiful, if cold, day.

We went out to the Lexington Cemetery the weekend before last with a friend who was visiting from out of town, who wanted to take photos there.
This is one of the shots I took that day. We had had 4 inches of snow the night before. It had been many years since I was there after a snow storm. It looks completely different, but no less beautiful.

I found another halfway decent photo of the eclipse on the 20th. I don't think it is as good as the others, but it seems to have attracted some attention on Flickr, having made it into Flickr Explore.

I think I took about 80 photos of the eclipse up to just before totality. Then the cold ran me inside.
I wasn't happy with any of them, other than the one I posted earlier.
Just as totality was ending, I went back outside with the tripod, and took about 6 more photos. This was the best one I got.
I hope the next total eclipse, three years from now, occurs during warmer weather.

I'm not sure I will get out there during the eclipse. It is wickedly cold here tonight. I just wanted to test some camera settings to see how they would work. I took this without using a tripod.
